Frequently Asked Questions

How long will the GemLight-Super run for?

This mainly depends on the capacity of your powerbank. The 10,400mAh powerbank normally supplied with the GemLight Super will operate the main LEDs for at least 10 hours when fully charged.

If you need a longer run-time - for example, if you are leaving a trap on-site for a few days - simply use a larger capacity powerbank.

Note that if you change the system settings (see the Advanced section) this may increase or decrease the run-time.

How long will the powerbank take to charge up?

The charge time for a particular powerbank depends on two factors: the capacity of the powerbank and the charging current.

The powerbank normally supplied with the GemLight Super has a capacity of 10,400 mAh. If charged from a standard micro-USB phone charger (at around 2A) it will take about six hours to charge from 0 - 100%. If you use a high-speed charger with the USB-C connector (at around 3A), the charge time will be nearer to four hours.

My new GemLight doesn't quite run for 10 hours.

There are two possible reasons for this:

The first is that the powerbank may need three or four charge/discharge cycles before it attains maximum capacity. Just use it a few more times and see if that improves your run-time.

The second is that run-time can be affected by some of the settings in the device. If you have changed some of these settings (see Advanced Mode) the run-time may be a little less or a little more.

The two outer LEDs look rather dim. Is this normal?

Absolutely! The two ultraviolet LEDs operate at two different wavelengths. The left hand LED runs at 365nm and the right hand LED at 405nm.

The human eye cannot actually see light at a wavelength of less than about 380nm, so the left hand LED looks very dim and the right hand one slightly less so.

The important thing to remember is that, even though you can't see it, each is emitting very powerful radiation - enough to potentially damage your eyes if viewed directly. This is why we say you should never look directly at the LEDs when they are operating.

What is Advanced Mode and how do I use it?

The GemLight Super operates perfectly straight out of the box - all you need to do is plug it in!

However, its sophisticated microcontroller allows for certain parameters to be changed and access to additional features. To find out more, visit our Advanced page.

How do I read the System Log on my device?

The GemLight Super automatically records the date and time that you plug in your system, when the main LEDs come on, the temperature, when the LEDs switch off and when you unplug the unit.

In order to access the System Log, you need to connect it to a PC and you will find instructions on how to do this - and how to access many other advanced features - on our Advanced page.

Is my GemLight-Super waterproof?

No. We describe the light unit as being 'weather-resistant'. What this means is that it should not suffer if exposed to light showers of rain, but it is unlikely to survive being immersed in a bucket of water!

You will see that your warranty does not cover water damage or damage caused by weather conditions, so if you are in doubt, it would be best to protect it within a plastic bag.

The powerbank is definitely not waterproof and, as it contains lithium batteries, should always be protected against the elements.

What do the indicator LEDs mean?

This is dependent on the date of manufacture of your Gemlight. If the serial number of your unit is less than 1034, you will have three small indicator LEDs on the right side of the unit. Serial numbers 1034 and later will have a single RGB LED in the top right corner.

This is what the single RGB indicator means:

  • Flashing white (six times): Initialising - normal startup
  • Flashing red (on startup): High voltage supply failure
  • Flashing magenta (on startup): Real-time clock failure
  • Flashing green: Normal operation. Waiting for darkness
  • Flashing blue: Dark level detected. Main LEDs will come on soon
  • Flashing multi-colour: Main LEDs imminent. Do NOT look at LEDs!

This is what the three small indicators mean:

  • Flashing all simultaneously (six times): Initialising - normal startup
  • Flashing red (on startup): High voltage supply failure
  • Flashing red and yellow (on startup): Real-time clock failure
  • Flashing green: Normal operation. Waiting for darkness
  • Flashing yellow: Dark level detected. Main LEDs will come on soon
  • Flashing multi-colour: Main LEDs imminent. Do NOT look at LEDs!
